What’s up with 3DS?

The European Commission brought Secure Customer Authentication to center stage for contactless payments. It was 2019 and merchants receiving payments from customers in Europe were now required to introduce additional authentication to checkout flows. Soon, 3DS soared as the go-to method for implementing SCA.

Five years later, the world of ecommerce is still using 3DS – but often begrudgingly. The reason? Every extra step on the shopper journey adds more friction, potentially causing customer churn.

Globally, 67% of ecommerce professionals are concerned about the impact of 3DS on conversion, according to Ravelin’s Fraud Trends 2023 Survey.

Meanwhile, across the pond, issuer banks are encouraging merchants to deploy 3DS checks, while locales including Canada and the USA are exploring similar options to safeguard payments.

3DS as a tool, not a blocker

Ravelin’s webinar promises to explore why the focus on 3DS friction is misguided.

It’s not about how many sales are lost to authentication; it’s about how many are lost to unnecessary authentication.
